Buffalo Wildlife Education: Humane Rat Removal

Humane ways to get rid of rats
· Exclusion is the best way to keep your home pest free. In order to do this, you will need to make sure that you aren’t trapping the rats inside your home. You can set live traps against the walls and in areas where you have seen the rats. Once they have been caught inside the trap, you can remove them and release them in a more suitable location. Make sure that you have eliminated all of the rats and check for babies. If you do find baby rats, remove them along with the mother. Once your house is critter free you can seal up all of the openings that they used.
· Close up all of the entry points to your home, except one. You can then install a one-way exclusion funnel that leads from the hole. Once the rats have left the nest they will be unable to regain access. You can remove any babies that are present and seal off the remaining opening.
· You can try to use a repellent to make your home less inviting. Some are notorious for not working, but there are some that are a bit more reliable.

Making your home less appealing
Making your house less appealing to rats could cause them to leave on their own.
· Make sure that you do not leave any food out that might attract them. Place all dry foods in containers that they are unable to chew through. Cardboard boxes are no match for the sharp teeth of a rat.
· Pick up pet food. Once your pets have finished eating make sure to pick up any uneaten food. It will be a feast for any rats in the vicinity.
· Clean all crumbs when you are finished eating. Rats do not require massive amounts of food in order to survive. Your crumbs could be just what they are looking for.
· Rub strong smelling oils, like peppermint or eucalyptus oil, on areas where rats are chewing. The smell should prevent them from chewing on the wood and might even send them on their way.
· Garages and attics are very popular places for rats to live. The reason behind this is they are usually less neat than the inside of the home. It provides more hiding places and they can live there undisturbedly for long periods of time. Make sure that your attic and garage are neat, this will give them less room to nest.

Keep your garden rat-free.
· Remove all large shrubs and plants next to your house. These are the ideal place for rats to construct their nests undetected. They can then easily upgrade to living inside your home.
· Place woodpiles on a platform and try to keep it away from walls. Even the smallest opening will be enough for a rat to gain entry.
· Do not throw bird seed on the ground. You may be attracting beautiful birds but you are also attracting less welcome critters.
